Imogen Cunningham: Symbolist with Poetry and Prose by William Morris
In 2012, 21st Editions and the Imogen Cunningham Trust announced the first in a trilogy of books on the
work of Imogen Cunningham. Imogen Cunningham: Platinum / Palladium was announced in March
and sold out within days.
Imogen Cunningham: Symbolist with Poetry and Prose by William Morris is the second book in our
trilogy on one of the most important women in the history of photography. The pairing of Morris is appropriate
because of his influence early on in her career while she was creating her iconic Symbolist works. We will be
printing many of the thirteen Imogen Cunningham Trust prints in the lavish gum-arabic and platinum process
which was popular at the time of their creation.
From John Wood's Introductory Note:
"Cunningham's work became more "Modernist" in appearance with the passage of time; however, that was
not where it began. Her first major work was a powerful series of photographs inspired, she claimed, by
Morris's writings. They arose out of the Symbolist tradition...
It would be interesting to try to guess which of Morris's poems inspired the individual Symbolist photographs
she created, but it would only be guess-work. As someone who has long studied and written about Symbolist
and Pictorialist photography, I tend to think—or guess— it was not so much individual poems that were the
inspiration as it was their feel and sensibility, the fading perfumes of an old century."

* 9 bound Imogen Cunningham Estate Prints printed in gum
arabic and platinum of Cunningham's early Symbolist work from
1905-1915.
* 1 frontispiece nude self-portrait of Imogen Cunningham.
* Poetry and Prose by William Morris, with an introductory
note by John Wood, printed letterpress on handmade
Twinrocker paper.
* Handcrafted in the United States.
