Guillaume Apollinaire coined the word “surrealism,” but no single term can define his style. He could also be classical, yet sometimes romantic, often deeply erotic and at other times chaste. His poetry quickly brings to mind the photographs of Arthur Tress, one of our era’s most creative visionaries, another surrealist, classicist, romantic, sometimes chaste yet often erotic artist. Tress, like Apollinaire, has never been content to repeat himself, yet his work is always unmistakably and uniquely his own. Our edition pairs 11 of Tress’s most famous images with a selection of Apollinaire’s finest work in a brilliant, new translation by Dafydd Wood.
