To the Wheatlight of June: The Visions of Ben Nixon and Steven Brown

The collection is housed in a handmade split cover magnetic closing case and display stand. It is
accompanied by a book of nine poems inspired and written for these images by Steven Brown,
illustrated with ten platinum prints, and with an introduction by John Wood.

Much of the power of Ben Nixon's photographs comes from the fact that he is a master of the
immensely complicated, difficult, rare and beautiful wet collodion process which he used to create
the images in this portfolio. The plates must be perfectly polished, evenly coated and then exposed
while still moist. Immediately after exposure the plate is removed from the camera and developed.
The entire process is extremely time sensitive and often requires a mobile darkroom. Each silver
gelatin photograph here is printed by the artist from a wet collodion glass plate negative and then
tea-toned and signed.

In 2011 Ben Nixon was nominated for both the Eureka Fellowship from the Fleishhacker Foundation
as well as the Baum Award from the Baum Foundation. This year he received the Pirkle Jones
Foundation Grant.

His work has been shown recently at the Oakland Museum of California: "Bending the Light" and at
the Center for Fine Art Photography: "An Unexpected Aesthetic - The Search for New Directions
and Alternative Processes." In October Nixon will be included in the exhibition "Tracing Light" at the
Datz Museum of Art in South Korea.
